A reflection on new spaces for performance art, between physical and digital

In the 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash by the American author Neal Stephenson, the term “metaverse” appears as a three-dimensional shared virtual space. This is produced by the convergence of improved physical reality and an ever- active virtual space in which real people coexist in the same time, wearing special glasses and headphones with interaction possible through avatars.

To coincide with Valentina Vetturi’s exhibition I Never Think of the Future. It Comes Soon Enough #2, staged in the rooms of the museum and the online metaverse art space platform ARIUM, questions such as the following will be discussed: what does it mean to inhabit a digital space through performance art? How do you play with the limits of the space to bring the physicality and experience of performance art to the fore? How can this new decentralised and hybrid ecosystem, capable of creating a set of shared experiences in a 3D space, allow us to explore new horizons of performance art and reflection?
