The city of Aquila, its buildings and its hidden corners were both subject and object for the artist Marcello Mariani, who used pieces of plaster and other fragments found in its streets to create his works. The Archetypical Cross was also made using these found materials, creating a historical, architectural and chromatic stratification that conjures the essence of the city.
Five canvases, covered with multiple layers of paint and thick fields placed on top of one another, are arranged on the floor in the shape of a Greek cross. What emerge from this composition are depictions of an earthly dimension, archetypical forms that can be traced to natural elements. Other forms instead evoke the afterworld and angels, as if wanting to break free of earthly events and weight to rise up to the divine.
Other venues participating in this Homage to Marcello Mariani with works by the artist on display include the Fondazione Carispaq, the Fondazione Giorgio de Marchis Bonanni D’Ocre Onlus, Palazzo Camponeschi and Banca Bper, creating a special itinerary that winds through the city of Aquila.
