A reflection in verse and prose on our fragilities, a letter of anger and love, a journey through an Italy that trembles, both intimately and on the surface of the Earth.
The 1980 earthquake in Irpinia, which swept through a land already marked by emigration, and the subsequent reconstruction, which caused several damages but did not diminish the ancient beauty of those places. But also the other Italian earthquakes, from Messina and Avezzano to the more recent ones in Emilia, L’Aquila and the Marches. Amongst tragedies that are collective, unforeseeable or due to human neglect, Franco Arminio, the inspiration and reference point for many actions against the population decline in inland Italy, starts from his own places and widens his gaze to evoke them one by one, digging through the rubble with the indignation of his civil prose and the painful tenderness of his verse. Arminio ardently asks literature to bear witness, reminding us that listening and paying attention to words are the first step towards rebuilding hope.
