Since 1987, Fabio Mauri has been creating a series of pieces characterised by a performative and intermedial dimension through the reading of texts and the projection of images, as in Reconstruction of Memory in Perception Off presented in 1988 at the Teatro Accademico Universitario in L’Aquila, the city where the artist has taught Aesthetics of Experimentation for twenty years. With this work Mauri aims to make visible the connection between art and thought in an unprecedented mode of expression in which the themes of memory, perception and cinema are intertwined with biographical elements. These performance pieces are an expression of fundamental aspects of Mauri’s work, such as the relationship with the theatre, the role of art in society, his role as an artist, educator and essayist. As he himself says: “All I can try to do is express the self in a different way, a new figurative piece, by questioning rather than teaching”.
