A journey to the end of the world and back
Appunti da un’Apocalisse is an extraordinary expedition, a restless search for the ultimate meaning of our existence shortly before we are swept away by a catastrophe we all now perceive as imminent. Everything in this book is real, yet the material described by the Irish journalist and critic Mark O’Connell seems to give rise to a novel, a dystopian science-fiction story from the pen of J.G. Ballard, Philip K. Dick or Aldous Huxley.
Our planet gives us the opportunity to visit places where an apocalypse has already taken place. Walking through the ruins of Chernobyl – the old cooling tower infested with crows, a trace of our magnificent fortunes, a horrifying photograph of our future extinction – O’Connell is overwhelmed by anxiety about the end.
To coincide with the SHARPER 2021 – European Researchers’ Night initiatives, the author tells us about a surprising journey that is an act of exorcism, the eradication of a terrible fixation and an atavistic fear that extends from him to us and the entire human race.
