The ambitious knight Brancaleone da Norcia, of noble origins, finds himself leading a peculiar band of braggarts on a mission to conquer the fiefdom of Aurocastro, in Puglia. Amidst plundered cities, fortuitously won battles and maidens to be rescued, the improvised army crosses the Italian peninsula, experiencing all the clichés of the great stories of chivalric epic. With this 1966 film, Mario Monicelli gives us one of the greatest successes of Italian cinema, telling a unique story with biting irony, in which farcical invention is mixed with cultured references.
