The fossil skeleton of Mammuthus meridionalis<\/em>, , the most important prehistoric find in the Abruzzo National Museum’s collection and one of the best-preserved and most complete specimens in the world, was found in 1954 at the former Santarelli kiln, a quarry where clay was extracted near Madonna della Strada di Scoppito, in the province of L’Aquila.<\/p>\n

On the occasion of the exhibition In itinere<\/strong><\/a>, Claudia Pajewski<\/strong> meets the public in conversation with Massimo Sandal<\/strong>, author of the book La malinconia del mammut. Specie estinte e come riportarle in vita, to discuss the Bias<\/strong> project, a commission developed in collaboration with MUNDA<\/strong>, which uses photography to analyse both the scientific aspects and the symbolic and iconic value that the Mammoth represents for the city.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

The title of the project (from the English “prejudice”, “distortion”) refers to the missing tusk of the Mammoth: this absence becomes an emblem of imbalance, marking a fracture in ancient times that links our fragility to that of the prehistoric animal and reminding us – as Sandal says in his book dedicated to the history of the great extinctions – that on Earth nothing is forever.<\/p>\n
